Sixth Posting

This is the last posting that I supposed to do in the end of the semester. This time my partner again is Ah Bee. This last assessment requires us to summary up the article “Beyond concordance lines: Using concordances to investigate language development in page 70-79”. Besides, another job that we need to do is searching the internet by finding articles and publications on the applications of concordance.

In this article, we find out some concordance software such as Wordsmith, MonoConc Pro and Microconcord. These software help in the tedious task of analyzing language data and greatly extend the potential of a corpus in language pedagogy. Corpora often help to inform on how words and grammatical constructions are used. The benefit of using a corpus in language is helping student to look at the systematicity of language as an interesting linguistic puzzle, rather than a set of boring rules to be memorized(Schmitt. 2002 :34). The new software such as “Range” has provided an additional perspective to corpus studies (Nation, 2002). The Emas corpus is an untagged and unedited learner corpus that contains written data in the form of 3 essays written by about 800 students.

Productivity in this article is indicated by the number of sentences per essay and the words per sentence, where as the range of vocabulary used in a corpus often determined by calculating the type of token ratio (Schmitt, 2002). This ratio is calculated by dividing the number of separate words in a text (type) by the number of words in the text (token) (Laufer and Nation.1995). Specialized software such as Range (Nation, 2002) is a vocabulary analysis program, which gives an indication of the kind of vocabulary used.

As a conclusion, although the concordance software can be used to analyze the language data available, but maybe its still easily disturbed by the huge amount of data available. The corpus data can be analyzed to inform language educators of language development.

Good translators are generally viewed as having at least the following three competencies: a solid understanding of the subject matter treated in the source text; an excellent command of the target language (usually the translator’s native language); and a good knowledge of the source language (usually a foreign language) (Sykes 1989: 35-39). In this study, we will consider only the first two of these skills (i.e. subject-field understanding and native-language competence), with a view to identifying the potential of a specialized monolingual native-language corpus as a resource for helping translators to improve these skills.

Two modes of use are envisaged for this software: trainer access to prepare materials, and direct trainee access. As an example of how such an approach can work, an account will be given of some material developed by the first author of this paper. The occasion was not a translation class, but a group consisting of a number of Greek Postgraduate research students, for whom the author was conducting a writing seminar. The students were all writing up research into 19th and 20th century Greek literary figures, and one problem was the extent of interference from Greek in the English of the students, and in the English of their arguments and hypotheses. One problem was that the students sometimes appeared to be over asserting their claims.

A search was conducted on would in A Brief History of Time and the Greek translation. The interleaved sentences, consisting of some 70 pairs, were reduced to some 30 or so by editing out all those where would corresponded to a Greek conditional form. The others were then printed out, and presented for discussion. Concordance is “economical in terms of time to implement because it requires only a program plus a text base” (Stevens 1990:5, cited in Stevens 1995).

Example:

A parallel French-English concordance on “pour” using an extract from Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry.

Original text

Translation

1. Ainsi, quand il aperçut POUR la première fois mon avion […]

1. The first time he saw my aeroplane, for instance […]

2. Alors elle avait forcé sa toux POUR lui infliger quand même des remords.

2. Then she forced her cough a little more SO THAT he should suffer from remorse just the same.

3. -Approche-toi que je te voie mieux, lui dit le roi qui était tout fier d’être enfin roi POUR quelqu’un.

3. “Approach, so that I may see you better,” said the king, who felt consumingly proud of being at last a king OVER somebody.

4. Car, POUR les vaniteux, les autres hommes sont des admirateurs.

4. For, TO conceited men, all other men are admirers.

5. C’est comme POUR la fleur.

5. It is just as it is WITH the flower.

These kinds of words are translated for original French text to English text. With concordance translation software, readers are more easy to get the actual meaning.

THE SAMPLE OF ARTICLE ABOUT TRANSLATION

1. http://www.erudit.org/revue/meta/1998/v43/n4/002134ar.html

Concordance is a method of displaying sentences or phrases that contain similar or identical words or expressions, to be able to copy and paste them in the translation. Concordance is an option provided in a computer-assisted translation (CAT) tool. A computer-assisted translation (CAT) tool rests on two steps –segmentation and translation memory (TM)– to boost the productivity of a translator. It also offers other terminology functions: concordance, glossaries, context search, reference search, terminology management, quality control, etc. Computer-assisted translation (CAT) is different from machine translation (MT). In computer-assisted translation, the computer program supports the translator, who translates the text himself. In machine translation, the computer program translates the text, with no human intervention during the translation process. More information refers to website: http://www.etudes-francaises.net/dossiers/translation.htm.

Another concordance is known as the Simple Concordance Program (SCP). Written by Alan Reed, this program is available free of charge. This program lets you create word lists and search natural language text files for words, phrases, and patterns. SCP is a concordance and word listing program that is able to read texts written in many languages. There are built-in alphabets for English, French, German, Greek, Russian, etc. SCP contains an alphabet editor which you can use to create alphabets for any other language. “Students could not see why the concordances could not be prepared in advance and handed out in class. This would allow more time for what they saw as more useful activities, essential practice of translation and summary” (Whistle 1999:77).

Example of concordances website that we can used for words translation to other languages

2. http://xml.coverpages.org/kingCreatingConcordancer.html

3. http://www.transgood.com/innovative.htm

As a conclusion, for all levels of language proficiency, one bonus to be had out of concordance is further development of electronic search skills, for example, transferable skills. In this module we have given an introduction to concordance as it is known now and with present technology – mainly in educational contexts, but increasingly web-sites run by publishers, newspapers, television stations and organizations of all kinds provide visitors with search forms.

When i answered the first quiz is gave me a thousand challenge because I must fight with the time that was been given. Beside that, I also must translate all the ‘Malay’ words in English because before this I have learned all the information about computer system only in English words and it give me a little bit problems to understand some difficult words. I also have lack of information about computer using and sometimes did not understand at all the questions in the easy level. Then I done my second quiz, the intermediate level and fortunately my score is 45/45. In this quiz I just do some revision and have some discussion with my boyfriend about computer using, he gave me a lot of tips answered the quiz. Now I have a new knowledge about computer using and its systems.

Talk about blogging, this is a new thing for me. Before this I never have such an experience doing blogging. Firstly when I started blogging, I think it was very difficult. Based on my past time experience as a secondary student, I always avoid from using computer when I want to find any information and I more prefer to find any information in newspaper or education magazines. When I took this subject that need me to use computer and well in computer using I realized that now I can improve a lot in my individual skill such as chatting via internet and writing skills. Talk about writing skill, doing blogging really related in improving my writing skill. For example, when I get into my written communication’s class, sometimes I don’t know how to make a perfect sentence and at the same time I’m afraid that my essays or sentences wrong in grammatically. Then, I started practice using computer such likes when editing my blog or done my assignment for blogging, in there,  I started typing what I want to type that can related with what my lecturer want  and automatically when using computer the automatic spelling check and grammar check will activated and detected my mistake while typing. The same applications on doing blogging also have been transferred by me when do writing, I can remember what mistake that I do  in writing an essay or sentences that I’m usually made. Beside that, blogging also can help me get more fresh idea about any current issues when I just shared my opinions with other bloggers. From that, I can improve my writing skill in written a good quality essays.

Blogging also bring me a lot of experience that I would never forget. Doing blogging are enjoyable and I it’s also can help me concentrate to find out what the good things for my blog. Before this, I don’t know anything about blogging; I’m stuck at the beginning when I did not know how to edit my blog, to change the background and also how to insert the pictures in my blog. At first, I felt really disappointed and felt down and then I never stop open my blogging and search for something that can bring me to master it and at last, I can do it all by myself. What I can say here, blogging really give me the valuable experience and will practice what I have learned when doing blogging as part of my work life in the future.

Now, my blog are most complete but there were another 2 assignment left that I must complete. I really hope before I complete my blog, I want to add my own video or anything that can attract more viewers out there to open my blog, I also curious to know how Raja Petra do his blog “Malaysia Today” until there were a millions peoples all over the world know him very well.

Before I know how to handle my blog successfully, I don’t have any creative idea to make my blog look superb. Before this, a have a lot of problem when using blog because I did not know the specific functions on blog and I did not know where to find the information that I must post in my blog. Then I spent a lot of my time at “PTSL Cyber Café’ to fix up my blog and now I satisfied with my blog because thus is my work, my own work that I’m start from zero until what I have now.

Now my blog are mostly complete, and I fell very excited to complete it, I have told my friends to open my blog and some of them are proud with my work and some of them can’t stop keep asking me how on to do blog. I also ask them to join me and comment my blog and with their comment I can fix up my blog and make more improvement on it.

I’m really happy now because I have my own blog, even tough I have many problems when try to finish it but I think it not wasting like that only because now, I have learned the important things when using computer. I think I will continue using blogging after I have graduate or working. This is a good opportunity to try the new technology and I think I also want to make blogging as my hobby now and the future.

FIRST POSTING

For this first posting, me and my partner Gan Ah Bee have decided to analyzed the text that we have took in http://www.rhlschool.com/read6n8.htm. The text is about ‘How television has changed” and we have already done the answer and then conclude the all text. ANALYZE READING COMPREHENSION. Reading comprehension can be defined as the level of understanding of a passage or text.  In this text, http://www.rhlschool.com/read6n8.htm, is talked on how television has changed by time. From the beginning, we get the message that televisions do not have more functions compared today lives where the television becomes one of the important things in our lives. If we looked back at the beginning where the televisions invented, it started with black and white. Now the technology has changes and made the television more useful to the peoples especially for the entertainment’s used. Even thought there are many advantages of televisions; we still can see the disadvantages that affect peoples. The one of the disadvantages that being touched by author is the television got a lot of garbage and a lot of stuff that parents do not want their kids to be exposed of these useless shows. From this text, we learnt how to put the appropriate words into the blanks. We have to think it carefully and match the answers in this incomplete text; otherwise we will be wrong in filling the answers. The other things that we have learnt in this text are the new vocabulary, such as ‘billboard’ and ‘setbacks’. Besides, we also can learn how to improve our grammar. As we look through this text, we find out the used of present tense and past tense are used in this text. Because the author talking the past time and during now. As a conclusion of the text, it was a good text which is can help us to polish our vocabulary skills and also our grammatical skills.
